“No!” I screamed. Metal met leather as Oni's sword bit into my weapon, still sheathed. I strained with both arms to hold it against his blow. His sword sank through the leather like water and into the edge of my sword. I felt the grind of metal on metal. From the edges of the new hole in my scabbard smoke sizzled and spiraled into the air. I threw all of my power, my will, into repelling that deadly blade and spilled him backwards. I think we were both surprised by my sudden strength, but I knew that if Oni had not threatened Sir Jakob, I could never have moved against him. Sir Jakob gave me courage. This time, I would not fail. Years’ worth of pent-up rage and agony filled my voice as I threw my fist forward towards that leering, hateful face of his. “Why can't you just leave me alone?!”
