Aunt Dimity Down Under by Nancy Atherton

"A gift isn't a gift if it becomes a burden."

The wedding of the century is about to take place in Lori Shepherd's small English village, Flint. Although the details have been kept under wraps, Lori and her family are integral part of the big day.

When the town's oldest, and most favorite, residents fall ill with what looks to be their last sickness, the wedding is put on hold. The Pym twins request that Lori find their disinherited older brother Aubrey and deliver him a letter. As it is their deathbed wish and Lori has a soft spot for the women because she has the town's only other twins, she readily agrees.

Her commitment sends her on a race across the globe and through New Zealand to track down not one, but three disenfranchised Pyms. With the help of Aunt Dimity Lori will try to bring home the Pym's great-grandniece breech before its too late.

Book Club Picks: Dimity Down Under Opinion

This was my first Dimity mystery (there are 14!) and I found it refreshing and easy to read. I liked that it was a quest for Lori, the main character, and that she learned new bits of information as she conquered each leg of her journey.

The Dimity twist, a supernatural friend whom Lori communicates with through an old leatherbound diary, was odd but again refreshing. I like a "clean" mystery in this new world of gore so this story appealed to me. I definitely am interested in reading back through the series and as they are quick reads, I don't think it will take me too long.

As far as book clubs go, the supernatural aspect would make for an interesting discussion!

  1. Would you do for the Pym's what Lori does? Why or why not?
  2. Could you live in a village like Flint where everyone knows everyone and treats each other like family instead of neighbors?
  3. Do you like Aunt Dimity? Why or why not?
