Book Club Picks: Bloody Good

"And now I have no wife, no child, no job, no home, or anything else that would point to a life being lived with any success. I may not be old, but I'm too old to have this much nothing."

The sleepy little village of Brytewood doesn't seem like the kind of place where evil lurks. True, it may be home to few Pixies and a Dragon, but the idea of the "timeless" in their midst is bordering on ridiculous. Especially as the few Others that might recognize this kind of force would never openly declare their "Otherness."

When a strange discovery leads to the introduction of Dr. Alice Doyle, and Conscientious Objector (war deserter) Peter Watson, it is impossible for either to guess that they'd end up working together - or falling in love. But that's just what happens. With the help of Alice's highly tuned-in grandmother and Sergeant Pendragon, perhaps these two young people will find happiness.

But before they can reflect on the possibility, random attacks in the night begin and are coupled with odd happenings such as bloodless cows, an unusual death, and repeated sabotage attempts on the local war base. Perhaps Alice and Peter have been brought together for a much larger, and more terrifying reason than they realize.

Book Club Picks: Bloody Good Opinion

In a world where Vampires have become the "good guys," it was actually unsettling to read about evil, blood-suckers running through the forests of England preying on innocent people. Luckily for the author, this worked to her advantage. The addition of "Others" in the form of dragon, pixies, fairies, and even a she-fox was easy to digest since the fantastic is a popular theme these days.

What sets Bloody Good apart from the rest of the Vampire books currently residing in the fantasy section is that its plot is based firmly in real, historical events. WW2 is an infamous time in our World's history and adding Vampires as possible German spies and covert forces seems plausible when we stop to consider the atrocities of the War we know to be true. Plus, who can resist a compelling love story? As the budding romance between Alice and Peter reaches new heights, readers cannot help but cheer for their success and, hopefully, their future together.

There are two more books in the Evans trilogy, all centered around the Others living in the village of Brytewood. This set makes for a fine personal read but I'm not sure it's going to appeal to a book club. While many readers today enjoy the occasional fantasy novel, this book (and series) would lend itself to individual reading much better. If you like Vampires, be they good or bad, this is a unique read.

PS...be prepared for sizzling, steamy, very explicit sex scenes!

Book Club Picks: Bloody Good Discussion Questions

  1. Do you believe that Vampires may actually exist? Why or why not?
  2. Is Peter's reason for being a CO a good one, in your opinion?
  3. Is Alice's behavior forward for the 1940s?
