Jack McCalister seems to have it all. He runs a high-profile magazine alongside his beautiful, charity spear-heading wife. He comes from "old" money and has a solid place in Boston society. He drives a Porsche. What more could a man want?
Turns out Jack does want more. And more for Jack is Erica, a beautiful inhabitant of the island he spent summers on as a boy. His growing love and desire for her takes him on many a weekend trip out to Clary's Cove. It is because of a visit to Erica that Jack happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and his life is irrevocably changed.
When he hits young Carrie Roberts early on a rainy morning, he flees the scene totally panicked. This leads into a series of strange events with the emergence of a stalker, a blackmailer, and a PI. Jack's losing his footing in a world where he was once so sure and the only thing he can think about is will those he loves make it out of this mess unharmed?

I really liked this novel. I wasn't really sure what to expect as the title gives nothing away. There is an element of mystery to the story although you don't spend the whole book wondering "whodunit." Instead, you are aware of who the main perpetrator is and are then surrounded by the lives and stories of many other, intriguing, characters each with a few secrets of their own.
Walerstein definitely tugs at our heartstrings through Erica's story and even has us feeling sorry for the no-good, rich-to-a-crime husband. I would say she even made Carrie's scummy boyfriend likeable. This is a book rooted in it's characters. The desire you'll have for wanting to know how each one will handle the situation they are in is what drives you to keep reading.
It's a quick and easy read, very well-written with no big questions left unanswered. I will say though, the ending will not satisfy some of you. It's almost like a movie that's just screaming for a sequel. Stay tuned...
