Debunking the Middle-class Myth: Why diverse schools are good for all kids by Eileen Gale Kugler

(Washington, DC)
Looking for a "good school"? Go beyond statistics and gossip and find out what kind of school truly educates.
"Debunking the Middle-class Myth: Why diverse schools are good for all kids," documents why every child should go to a school with peers from other races, cultures, classes, and religions. The American Library Association called it "essential", noting that "the book is particularly valuable because of the rarity of its voice and its call for parents to rethink the types of environments needed for the future of students and country."
Many parents fall prey to the myth that the best school is a white middle-class school from Ozzie and Harriet days. The reality is that schools with kids from different races, ethnic groups and economic backgrounds offer unique opportunities for academic and social learning. Students learn to think more deeply, to question more, to see a range of perspectives on issues, to work with peers from different backgrounds – all essential 21st century skills!
The book was inspired by the education of the author’s children at one of the nation’s most diverse high schools. Based on her own experiences along with extensive interviews of educators, students and parents from across the country, Kugler documents why a diverse school is the place to educate all our children for the future.
