Can't Wait to Get to Heaven by Fannie Flagg

FANNIE FLAGG BOOKS SYNOPSIS

A down home easy going drama, Can't wait to get to Heaven is about an elderly lady and how she affects the lives of everyone she touches. Readers go along for a wild ride with Elner Shimfissle to Heaven and back. You'll visit the aged old question - What is life about anyway?

Elner’s grand-niece Linda figures out what she always heard was true. “There are always regrets when you lose a loved one. She would live the rest of her life with a thousand “why didn’t I’s?” and “if only I had’s” but now it was too late…Life. You never know when a conversation may be the last one you will ever have" (59).

Fannie Flagg writes, produces, acts in TV/film/theatre, and is a NY Times Bestselling author. Her Fried Green Tomatoes movie script, which she wrote based on her novel, was nominated for an Academy Award and The Writers Guild of America Award.

QUEENIE B SAYS

Fannie Flagg has done it again! This soul filled, feel-good-book is headed for the movie theaters if I have anything to say about it!

Charmed by a Fannie Flagg Book
Flagg is charming once again in her new novel about an 89 + (that’s part of the mystery) woman named Elner Shimfissle. Elner loves bugs and animals and people of all types. She was always trying to figure out the mysteries of life and asking everybody questions at all hours of the day and night. She had a childlike fascination with nature, like wondering how can a watermelon seed produce a watermelon 200,000 times it's weight?

She was content to live simply and happily. Elner whole-heartedly “Loved Thy Neighbor.” She affected everyone in a most basic, emotional way. When she falls out of a fig tree, dies and goes to Heaven, she gets to ask lots of questions of her Maker and then return to Earth to live on for a few more years.

Heartwarming and realistic, the people of this Missouri town rally around the news that Elner has passed and begin to question their own lives and the importance of it. One character quips, "Scratch any person over the age of sixty, and you have a novel so much better, certainly more interesting than any fiction writer could make up. So why try?" (33)

As Good As Fried Green Tomatoes?
Definitely! Truly a wonderful read, comparable with her legendary Fried Green Tomatoes. Fannie Flagg books will keep you guessing to the end but the ride is worth the wait! This awesome book club read supplies a readers guide and southern recipes from the book.

Prepare to cry, laugh out loud, and fall in love with the characters over and over again in this special addition to the Fannie Flagg books list.

FANNIE FLAGG BOOKS DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Elner Shimfissle dies and goes to heaven. How does her passing affect her family and friends?
  2. When Elner comes back, there are many changes that take place in the lives of her people. Whose life seems to be affected the most?
  3. The author of this book obviously believes that real people’s lives make a better story than made up characters. Do you agree?
