Book Club Choices: The Genesis Secret

"C’est un myste*re."

Rob Lutrell is a journalist that has traveled the world for his job. Although this sounds glamorous, it's not. He went to Iraq where he was almost killed by a suicide bomber. Not only does he risk his life for his stories, his relationship with his young daughter is also affected. His latest story has taken him to Kurdish Turkey, more specifically Gobekli Tepe, the site of an archeological dig. There are those that are excited about this dig and those that are not. What is it that the archeologists are after?

Back in the States, DCI Forrester has his hands full with trying to solve a string of gruesome murders that have begun but there are so many pieces of the puzzle that need to be put together, he's struggling. On top of trying to figure out what the murderers are searching for, he must pay attention to the seemingly religious aspect of each one. Will he be able to figure it out before it's too late?

Book Club Choices: The Genesis Secret Opinion

Tom Knox has done an amazing job of detailing this story from the archeological dig site to the ghastly murders. In fact, this may be too specific for some book clubs, so double check with your group first. Otherwise, this was an interesting book. The mystery facet of the story was well-thought out and very intriguing. There are some truths in the story as well which are explained on the book's website.

Overall, I liked it. It reminded me of a cross between Dan Brown's style and my favorite fictional video game, Tomb Raider. It kept my interest but the murders are a bit too graphic for my taste. It's a psychological thriller not suitable for those who are easily grossed out. If your group can get past that fact, it definitely provides plenty of discussion opportunities.

Book Club Choices: The Genesis Secret Discussion Questions

  1. Do you believe that cruelty could be genetic to some extent?
  2. If you had to come up with a theory as to why Gobekli Tepe was buried, would it be?
  3. What were some of your favorite parts of this book? What were the most disturbing to you?
