Good Book Recommendations: How the Other Half Hamptons

"There was no being "shy" in a Hamptons share house. When you lived alongside forty-odd other people, you had to get used to being seen at all times, speaking before a large group more often than not, watching indecent behavior happen right in front of you."

Rachel, Allison, and Jamie all have their different reasons for paying two grand to spend the summer sharing a house in the Hamptons with forty other people every other weekend. At least they have each other!

From the moment they set foot in driveway of 1088 Montauk Highway, their lives are irrevocably changed. Allison is in need of a summer away from her failed relationship of five years. Rachel wants to escape the wedding cloud being held tightly over her head by her older sister Dana. And Jamie just wants to have fun. With as many guys as possible.

The fun does come as they spend every other weekend slopping around on beer soaked floors, sharing a bathroom with twenty other girls scrambling to get ready all at once, having random late-night visitors try to get in their beds, and subsisting on a diet of pretzels and alcohol. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, or at least a disgusting weekend, but this experience turns out to be the best thing each one could have done for themselves.

Incorporate a lengthy cast of memorable characters and the girls are in for some crazy, unforgettable moments!

Good Book Recommendations: How the Other Half Hamptons Opinion

If you're a Sex and the City fan, you've heard many a reference to the divide between "twenty-something girls" and "thirty year-old women." Jasmin Rosemberg gives a voice, a life, and our sympathy to the life a twenty-four year old girl striving to make a place for herself in New York City.

So what do these girls do? They head for the Hamptons. Except they don't live with quite the glitz and glamour known to homeowners and frequent vacationers there. As a matter of fact, their accommodations are a complete nightmare! Although the house is nice enough, the combination of too many people and too much drinking makes it, virtually, a fraternity house. And not the clean, upstanding ones.

All that aside, these girls manage to come into their own over the course of the summer. The situation forces them to figure out what they want in life and then actually figure out how to get it.

Rosemberg's book is a quick read with characters we can relate to and also love to hate!

Good Book Recommendations: How the Other Half Hamptons Discussion Questions

  1. Would you, in your twenties, have paid for the experience of a Hamptons share house? Why or why not?
  2. Which of the boys do you think you would have been interested in upon first meeting?
  3. Should the girls "hook up" or does it allow the boys to treat them disrespectfully?
