Vicky's grandmother dying is not the first time a woman in her family has left her with no explanation. When she was just a baby, her mother Grace, walked out with her guitar and not even a goodbye for her baby girl. Losing Grace has haunted Vicky all her life.
Fortunately she has her older brother Kevin to look out for her and help her through the nights she spends wondering where her mother has gone and why she doesn't write. The other men in Vicky's house, while they love her in their own way, the are unexpressive and do not remember that there is a girl child growing up in their house.
Vicky grows into a beautiful young woman with big-city dreams of becoming a chef. Along with her best friend Brenda, she plans to move to Montreal to pursue her destiny. But her life is not all "peachy-keen" as they say. An older boy is stalking her, trying to get her alone to take advantage of her innocence. And just when she thinks things have calmed down, something terrible happens to Kevin. By the time she's graduated high school, this girl has known more than her fair share of sorrow.
When she meets Vincent she is unprepared to open her heart, especially since he is the enemy. If she chooses to let him in, she might lose all that ever mattered to her family and her town. But if she doesn't, she may lose the one great love of her life.

This is the first book to receive a 5-crown rating from me in a long time. I've read plenty of other fantastic books that follow this same "coming-of-age" story line for a young woman. But something about Without Grace really touched me, spoke to me on a deeper level than its counterparts.
Vicky is unassuming. She is small-town. She loves her brother fiercely and cooks for her daddy and grandpa from the age of ten on. Her best friend is never very nice to her but she still calls her a best friend. And even when other women give her the evil eye and won't let their husbands around her alone because of her beauty, she still smiles and babysits their children. This character, this young girl, worms her way into your heart from the moment you meet her working diligently on a special Valentine for her brother in her kindergarten class.
Then there are the men in her family. Crazy, unruly, unemotional, and downright rude at times but with hearts bigger than any man you might find these days. They were made of stronger stuff back then so even when life gets them down, they manage to grab a box of Tic-Tacs and keep right on going.
On top of all this, there is the Romeo-Juliet like love story that will keep you gasping for more right up until the last page. Add it all together and the result is the kind of story you'd be a fool to miss out on!
