Memorable Harry Potter Quotes
The Goblet of Fire - Harry Potter Book 4

Dobby cannot let Harry Potter lose his Wheezy! (Dobby to Harry, p. 491)

Oh that's my Foe-Glass. See them out there, skulking around? I'm not really in trouble until I see the whites of their eyes. That's when I open my trunk. (Professor Mad Eye Moody to Harry, p. 343)

Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. (Dumbledore to Students, p. 724)

Harry Potter Book Report
The Goblet of Fire - Harry Potter Book 4

The summer comes to an end with Harry being invited to go to the Quidditch World Cup with the Weasley family and Hermione. Mr. Weasley, Fred and George, and Ron pick Harry up via the Floo Network which means they come through the Dursley's fireplace. Considering the Dursley's had their fireplace closed off, it ends up being quite a mess! Fred and George give Dudley "Ton-Tongue Toffee" which they invented, causing Dudley's tongue to hit the floor. Harry's goodbye to his family is not a pretty one.

Harry gets to stay at the Burrow with the Weasley's and then off they go to the Quidditch World Cup. An entire countryside has been "magicked" so that muggles cannot find it, and witches and wizards from all over the world are attending arriving using portkeys and apparition. At the match Harry meets Ludo Bagman and Barty Crouch who are responsible for planning and implementing the entire event. After the World Cup is over (during which they get to use Omnioculars, see Viktor Krum in person, and watch Ireland win) a disturbing event takes place. The Dark Mark, "You-Know-Who's" signal, is conjured and several muggles are attacked. Harry's wand is stolen only to be returned after he, Ron, and Hermione are confronted by Barty Crouch as if they are the culprits. Come to find out that Mr. Crouch's House Elf, Winky, had Harry's wand and seems to have conjured the Dark Mark. Mr. Crouch coldly let's her go much to Hermione's dismay.

The school year in Harry Potter Book 4 finally begins after quite a bit of action. Professor "Mad-Eye" Moody, ex-Auror and constant fighter of the Dark Arts, is introduced as their new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Dumbledore announces that Hogwarts will host the TriWizard Tournament and that students from two other schools, Beauxbaton and Durmstrang, will join them for the year. All the students, especially Fred and George Weasley, are really excited about entering the tournament until Dumbledore reveals that an age restriction has been placed and that no student under the age of sixteen can enter. Furthermore, the "champion" from each school will be chosen by the Goblet of Fire which will not accept under age entrants. And none other than Barty Crouch and Ludo Bagman will be running and judging the tournament.

Well wouldn't you know it? Harry somehow gets entered and chosen as the fourth TriWizard Champion! Because of this Ron gets really mad at Harry and they stop talking. Ron thinks Harry entered himself secretively without telling Ron how to do it too. Hermione is constantly acting as go-between trying to make them friends again. During this time Rita Skeeter, the annoying reporter from The Daily Prophet begins writing fantastical stories about Harry for the newspaper. Many of the other students think Harry is enjoying this publicity, including Ron, and he is teased mercilessly. As the first task approaches, Hagrid shows Harry that each Champion will have to go up against a fierce dragon to retrieve a Golden Egg. Harry is sure to tell Cedric, the other Hogwarts Champion, because he thinks it's the right thing to do. Harry is able to defeat his dragon, the Hungarian Horntail, by using a summoning charm to summon his firebolt broomstick and outfly the dragon. After seeing this Ron relents and agrees Harry could not possibly have entered himself in the tournament because it is so dangerous.

Other major events take place in Harry Potter Book 4 between the tasks - the Yule Ball which Hermione attends with Viktor Krum, shocking and angering Ron. Hermione also creates S.P.E.W. or the "Society for Promotion of Elfish Welfare" in an attempt to secure freedom and wages for house elves. She finds out that both Dobby and Winky are working at Hogwarts along with hundreds of other House Elves. She is enraged but can't get any support, even from the House Elves, because they enjoy serving their masters. Professor Moody runs an interesting class, showing the students the three "Unforgivable Curses." Moaning Myrtle helps Harry open the Golden Egg and he figures out he's going to have to swim underwater for an hour. Right up until the last moment he doesn't know how he'll do this but Dobby brings him Gillyweed and he sprouts gills.

During this time Barty Crouch has gone missing and right after the second task Harry sees him wandering around the Forbidden Forest. By the time he gets Dumbledore, Crouch has gone. Harry meets with Dumbledore to discuss some disturbing dreams at which time he finds the Pensieve. The Pensieve holds all a person's thoughts they want to keep but take out of their head to make room for new ones. Harry goes into Dumbledore's thoughts and sees Barty Crouch banish his son, Barty Crouch Jr, to Azkaban for being a supporter of Voldemort.

The Goblet of Fire

The third task comes round at the end of the year. Harry and Cedric find the Goblet of Fire at the same time while in the maze and when they grab it together they are transported (because it's a portkey) to the Riddle graveyard. Cedric is killed by none other than Peter Pettigrew who did indeed return to help his master. Pettigrew carries out an intricate potion and Voldemort rises again. He calls his Death Eaters to him and Harry sees the faces of many of the parents of students he goes to school with, including Lucius Malfoy. Harry and Voldemort go head to head and because their wands come from the same Phoenix a strange sort of counter spell happens where the wands lock. Voldemort's wand starts spewing out the souls of the people he most recently killed including Lily and James Potter! With the help of these spirits Harry is able to make it back to the portkey with Cedric's body and return to Hogwarts.

There he is escorted, very shaken and upset, by Mad-Eye to the castle. Almost before he realizes he's done it, Harry figures out that Mad-Eye is responsible for all of this and in service to Voldemort. Dumbledore saves the day again when he bursts in and disarms Moody. We find out that Barty Crouch Jr, supposedly dead in Azkaban, escaped with the help of his mother and has been drinking Polyjuice Potion all year to become Moody while keeping the real Moody locked in his trunk!

Harry Potter Book 4 ends with Harry winning the TriWizard Tournament but giving the money to Fred and George to start their joke shop. Dumbledore encourages the three schools to maintain the friendships they've found that year now that Voldemort is back. The Ministry of Magic wants to pretend that everything is fine. And finally, Hermione captures Rita Skeeter, who it turns out is an unregistered Animangus, and locks her up in a jar.

Harry Potter Book Review
The Goblet of Fire - Harry Potter Book 4

What a year. Harry Potter Book 4 marks the beginning of the true fight of good against evil. I am rooting for Harry shamelessly.

The scene at the beginning of the book where the Dursleys meet the Weasleys is by far the best end of summer scene between Harry and his family. Mr. Weasley is so sweetly clueless about the world of muggles and Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon, and Dudley are so totally petrified of the world of wizards that it makes for a hilarious, endearing (on the part of Mr. Weasley) situation. Definitely my favorite opening in the Potter series.

The Quidditch World Cup does go on and on but it's important to introduce the characters of Crouch, Bagman, Winky, and the conjuring of the Dark Mark. This sets the stage for the school year. This is our first glimpse of real discord between Harry and Ron and it's awful! Poor Hermione runs back and forth trying to help them patch it up but to no avail. Harry is hurt that Ron thinks he enjoys the limelight and Ron is hurt that Harry is in the limelight - again. The turn from children to teenagers becomes even more obvious as Ron struggles with his feelings for Hermione. He doesn’t ever admit it but we all know mainly because of his jealous behavior towards her friendship with Viktor, that he's definitely falling in love.

And so does Harry - well starts to - with Cho Chang before Cedric snaps her up. Once Cedric dies it seems as if that is a lost cause. The end scene where Voldemort rises again is powerful and frightening all at once. We know from this point forward that things will never be the same. It was a nice surprise to see Lily and James helping Harry out and made us, yet again, feel the stab of sorrow for the orphan with such a heavy burden to carry around with him. I think Harry is starting to figure out that he will eventually have to really "fight" Voldemort. But if we know Harry, which by now we definitely do, we know he will fight hard and die trying to save the people he loves from Voldemort's clutches.

And the winner is...

...Harry Potter Pensieve

Why? The Pensieve may be one of the most enigmatic items of the series. Dumbledore is able to take his thoughts, and anybody else's thoughts which he acquires, and store them for safekeeping. It is introduced in Harry Potter Book 4 and will come in handy later on as we watch he and Harry on their quest for information about Voldemort's past.

And What About Lord Voldemort?
The Goblet of Fire - Harry Potter Book 4

He's back. Professor Trelawney's prediction from book 3 comes true when Pettigrew helps the Dark Lord rise again. Harry meets him in the Riddle graveyard and manages to just barely escape with the body of Cedric thanks to Priori Incantatem which happens when his and Voldemort's wands lock spells. The Ministry of Magic chooses to ignore Voldemort's return but Dumbledore, always our hero, believes Harry without question.
