Ice Land is set in 1000AD and is a story stepped in the rich history of its people and the Gods they worshipped. Freya is the goddess of love, although she is no stranger to heartbreak herself. As a matter of fact, she has become more the goddess of heartbreak and lovelorn than anything else. As this story begins, she is searching for the reason behind the unsettling activities of Mount Hekla, the large volcano that borders the realm of Gods. Her journey will take her far and wide, above and below ground, to see out a necklace that will bring her the answers she seeks.
Fulla is a young woman raised by her grandfather after having lost her mother to childbirth and her father to a harsh land dispute gone very wrong. The issue forefront on her mind, and mostly because it is forefront in her grandfather's mind, is an impending betrothal. Fulla would like to marry for love. Whether or not this happens is not in her hands.
How these two women, both extraordinary in their own worlds, end up meeting is a long and spellbinding story full of love, betrayal, familial relationships, and lore.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I am certainly no stranger to the world of fantasy, being an avid reader of Harry Potter, Twilight, and Lord of the Rings. I was nervous, however, about trying a book about a world and people I knew nothing of and having that book based in myth and legend.
Delightfully I found that Tobin knows Ice Land 1000AD as if she lived and breathed it herself! I became so caught up in Freya's world that even as she soared from one destination to the next, or startled people with her intense beauty, she seemed like a person I might know and come to like. I felt much the same about Fulla. And this is to say nothing of the secondary characters, the men mostly, who inhabit the hearts of these women. Between Dvalin, Sky, and Vili - a girl has all the romance and masculinity she needs for one story.
If you have a group of fantasy lovers, or even a group willing to give fantasy a go, I absolutely recommend Betsy's book.
