How did you become interested in the topic of human trafficking? Does it really happen in the manner described by Marcus -- where a young woman is stolen off a beach after having been "tagged" by a trader?

Pamela Wright
I became interested in this topic of trafficking because I have seen the devastation that sexual abuse brings to children. I am a foster parent and the severe damage inflicted on these children will stay with them throughout their lives. I deal with children in care that suffered abuse by their family or friends of their family but I am very aware of stranger trafficking. Yes, the fictional character,"“Emily," was taken from a tropical beach. Emily disappeared, just as Natalee Holloway vanished in Aruba and just as many more young women and children vanish each year. My research is shocking in that hundreds of thousands of people are kidnapped and sold by human traffickers each year.

Your daughter, Marie Crist, also writes about vigilante justice. How is it that both of you are passionate about the same topic? Did you decide to write books at the same time on similar topics or did it just turn out that way?

Pamela Wright
My daughter, Marie, was raised to always look out for the rights of not only her, but others as well. We, as a family always tried to step up and help which is why we became a foster family. Through the years, we often talked about the injustice of the legal system. We saw the rights of pedophiles always supersede the rights of child victims. The judicial system is flawed when it comes to the protection of children. This fact led to several fictional story lines we have developed. Both book series are two of the story lines we chose to write about. We also have cross over characters in subsequent books which adds a powerful alliance to both series.

Are we ever going to find out what Sarah's dad did to make them run from the FBI? I was saddened by the way her father's life turned out after they left Seaside. Why did things end so badly for him?

Pamela Wright
Do not believe everything you read!!

Sarah heard her father had drunk himself to death. Sarah was not privy to her parents' plight with the FBI and because of that fact; she made many child-like assumptions. I cannot divulge upcoming events due to facts not yet introduced.

John was totally creepy! I could see that he struggled with his demons but what makes him any better than the monsters he preys upon?

Pamela Wright
John does have his demons from the past. John began his mission with the best of intentions and yet lost his focus. We see this happen so often when greed, lust, or any other deadly sins trap us. Let us not forget, abuse is generational and more often than not, passed from victim to victim. The difference in this story line is John, a child victim, chose to victimize perpetrators rather than other innocent children. John's victimization damaged him and created a very dangerous and angry man.

Hunter is obviously a character with much more to reveal. What can we expect of him in the stories to come? On that note, which characters will we see again from this book?

Pamela Wright
Hunter is a central character in book two, Justifiable: Mexico. Marcus and his team from Duplicity are also, very prevalent in the new book. Hunter stays in contact with his friends in Seaside but his business is serious and deadly along the Mexican border. Look for a love interest to come his way although Hunter seems to be a serial loner.

Who is your publisher? Do you have an editor? A PR rep? Are you and your daughter working as a team when it comes to the finalization and publication of your novels?

Pamela Wright
Our publisher is Reaction Press, and yes, we are a team although we write separately with crossover characters in subsequent books. We have an editor, Andrea Greenlee, in ABQ, NM and Julie Schoerke of JKS Communications provides our PR.

The book has two complete stories running parallel to each other which, of course, eventually intersect. Will each book in the Justifiable series be like this one, with the yacht Duplicity at the foundation of the plot? How many books do you have slated for this series? What are you working on right now?

Pamela Wright
Duplicity is fundamental to the series as is Hunter and his elite team. The series along with Marie Crist's series, Citizen Chronicles, have several separate and elite teams set in place to rid the world of those that trap, torture, rape and kill the victims of human trafficking. Book two, Justifiable: Mexico is due out in spring of 2012 with book three, Justifiable: Rio following. I am deep in the conflict along the Mexican border with Hunter's team and Duplicity has just sailed into the Gulf of Mexico as well. Readers will be taken on a rollercoaster ride of emotions from page one.

Queenie D Says:

Pamela Wright is the mother of a mother-daughter author team. Her daughter, Marie Crist, is an author we've also spent time with this month. Both women write about vigilante justice and abuses against children, shocking the readers with the sad truth that there are many adults in the world who would harm an innocent child without a second thought, and continue on about their lives as if they had done nothing wrong.

Justifiable Oregon is an interesting and complex story with many characters and plot lines running simultaneously. In one chapter you might hear about "Terrible Tilly," the lighthouse which houses many dark secrets as well as an off-putting man named John. Next you might find the continuation of Sarah and Dan's reunion, and how their lives are intersecting with a drug cartel in Mexico. After that perhaps you are swept aboard Mr. Jackman's yacht, Duplicity, to wine and dine with men who participate in the human trafficking trade. And finally, it's possible that you are learning about Doc and how his supplemental regimen for young, star athletes is quickly backfiring.

Wow, right?! It's actually amazing to me how the plot continues to thicken and tie together, combining all these stories into one solid novel. I was floored by the thought that practices such as described in the book, stealing a young bride off of an exotic beach on the first night of her honeymoon and selling her to a sex-slave trading ring, happen in real life. When writing up my interview for Ms. Wright, I had quite a few questions about her inspiration for this story.

I definitely jumped right into this book and kept reading until I was done. I believe this is a first edition because there are some editing mistakes that I picked up on (being an English professor can be annoying at times!) but the story was so compelling that it didn't slow me down or change my overall rating of the book. I can see book clubs having a great discussion about the topics in the novel and if they paired it with Marie Crist's Citizen Out, there would be a powerful meeting on their hands!
