Book Club Queen

Looking for fun, humorous books

by Christie
(Sacramento CA)

We are looking for book recommendations of fun, humorous and interesting books. We have read the Charlaine Harris "Dead" series, doing Christopher Moore's "Lamb" next, and then probably Jasper Fforde's "Tuesday Next" book.

We are a group of professional women that work long hours, read a lot for work and on our own time, and our book club is focused on reading some fun things that will make us laugh and goes good with sangria! Any suggestions welcome!

Queenie D's Response:

Hi Christie! Your book club sounds really fun! Jasper Fforde's series are definitely unique and quirky, a perfect fit for what you are describing.

Here are a few recommendations:
1. Mia King - she writes really fun, cute, heartwarming stories with fantastic female heroines. Try Table Manners.

2. Rhys Bowen - a mystery author that has several different series, of which I recommend the Royal Spyness mysteries. She's clever and her characters live such spoiled, silly lives that a reader can't help but smile!

3. Rowena Cherry - alien romance novels. Sounds crazy right? Rowena is incredibly witty and her alien worlds rival the intricacies and detail of Harry Potter. Definitely a fun author. Try Insufficient Mating Material.

Hope this helps! Come back and tell us all about what you've chosen.

Happy Reading!

Funny Book! NEW
by: Anonymous

Your book club sounds like a group that would thoroughly enjoy a book I just read at the suggestion of a friend. "Confessions of a Catholic School Dropout" by Patti Lavell had me rolling on the floor, laughing like a crazed person.

It's the author's story of growing up in a strict Irish Catholic environment but her godmother is a drunk, Irish woman who steals the show. The humor can be off-color but not offensive. I laughed, I cried and I was sad when the book ended.

Highly recommended for those who want to laugh.

funniest book i've read
by: Anonymous

my favorite is The Porridge King by R.D. Winfrey--if you like your comedy in a more Pythonesque vein, this is the book for you. I've read it twice now and still giggle out loud like a lunatic! Great, funny stuff with complex characters and intense action.

The Economics of Sex - funny
by: Anonymous

"The Economics of Sex" by Robert Shields

Review:
A funny and intriguing perception into sex with the use of economics. A compelling exercise for the arm chair intellectual, or those just curious as to what happened in their sex lives when nothing else could explain it.

Robert Shields is an expert witness as an economist in the utility industry. He has testified in a multitude of dockets and other legal proceedings. Graduating at the top of his economics class at the University of Arkansas and winning the award as the ?Most Outstanding Student in Economics,? he applies his worldly insight of economics to the arena of sex, explaining some of the better or worse moments of our sex lives.

Shields is also a syndicated sports writer. He applies his same comical humor that he has used for over ten years in his sports column. His incorporation of witticism and sex make this study in economics worthwhile.

I think you could do no better than books by Bill Bryson--I did "A walk in the woods" first, split my sides laughing. The Australia one is very funny and interesting. He definitely has a different slant.
