Book Club Choices: Murder at Blue Falls by Maggie Bishop
Jemma has returned home to her parents' ranch to try and get her life together. After dissolving her last relationship, she decided to spend time alone with her favorite horse. She helps her parents by leading trail rides for their guests. Nothing is ever that simple though. Strange occurrences start to take place high up in the Appalachian Mountains. First, someone kills a few of the pet dogs in the area. Then, everyone's mail goes missing along with some small personal possessions. Jemma is questioned about these things until she finds a dead body and begins receiving threats of her own. Following her instincts and the things she learned from TV, Jemma's determined to take matters into her own hands and solve the crimes. Will she be able to solve the case? Will she remain a suspect? Will she put herself and her family in danger?
I enjoy reading mystery novels, especially when they keep you in suspense. In this novel, there was a bit of suspense and romance so it held my interest, but the story line was simple. I liked it but I don't know if it would make a good book club selection. There may not be enough to generate a group discussion. The author mentions the TV show CSI several times throughout this book which made it seem like it could be a script for an episode. You can learn a little bit more about that in the interview. Also, in the epilogue it explains why there are photographs throughout the book. Although I can see why the author included them, for me they were a distraction that did not add substance to the overall story.
