June 3, 2009. Queenie D discusses right and wrong with M. Gwynn, author of The President was a Good Man.
Book Club Discussion: Interview with Murl Gwynn
You've
put quite a spin on the phrase "a good man!" At the start of the story President Prinston is considered a good man because he is honest with the
public about his character flaws, but there are so many! How did you come up with the idea of a good man being one who doesn't hide anything from
the public?
The
idea that a good man being one who doesn't hide anything from the public is rare in our society these days and all too often society and historic
timing seem to dictate the covert or overt personalities of our leaders. I took hints of modern and historical presidents as I thought about the
character of President Prinston.

Your
story is set in the future. Little things like the car that runs on air or the "Un-Ad" campaign are very creative. What research and/or life
experiences helped you to think futuristically?
I
am an avid Sci-Fi fan and keep up on the latest technology that touches our everyday lives. Actually, the futuristic aspects of the book were
very minor compared to what is taking place these days. It is easy coming up with futuristic ideas just by watching the Sci-Fi Channel, TLC or
Discovery. Any writer that needs material for futuristic plots and the like can find it easily.

I
will be honest; I was absolutely shocked about the spiritual element of this story. There was no indication for a while that it would rely so heavily
on Christianity. Can you explain how these two ideas, a corrupt president and a saved soul, came together?
Being a
Christian myself it came naturally to weave the daily life touching experiences and those spiritual elements that all humans have to deal with.
The corrupt president, President Prinston, was a composite of anyone in general. I believe that it doesn't matter what a person's life was or is
like as long as they turn, honestly, to God and the Savior.

You
seem to be making a commentary on the world of politics. Do you personally believe that many of the people, men, who run our country, are corrupt?
I
guess I was making a commentary on the world of politics in general, but I don't believe those who are in government are any worse or any better
than any other human.
Book Club Discussion: Interview with Murl Gwynn
The
ending was outrageous! Do you find it believable for this type of story?
I
knew the ending would cause some people to question its reality, but I do believe it is believable and very plausible. An outrageous ending sure
gets you thinking and I of course am writing the sequel to this book.
Book Club Discussion: Interview with Murl Gwynn
Do
you plan to continue writing?
I
love writing and am writing the sequel to this book and two others right now.
I find writing comes from a side of me that was dormant for years. I could hardly read until I was twenty six and in my wildest dreams never
imagined writing anything for someone else's enjoyment.
I'm a right-brain person and writing gives vent to that part of my personality and life.
