Nick's New Heart

Heart transplants are high drama. They make national headlines and are subjects for TV shows especially if it is a twenty-three month old child. Nick's New Heartis about that drama. It is the story of my youngest son?s heart transplant. Nick was born with a heart defect, had three open heart surgeries, and a heart transplant before the age of two. Seventeen years later Nick is nineteen years old and a college student.

Andy and I wanted the surgery date to be sooner rather than later, but we still had questions about the operation. I asked Dr. Kanter to call me, which he did a few days later. He and I discussed the pros and cons of the repair.
There was a pause in the conversation, and then Dr. Kanter asked, "Susan, are you sitting down?"
"No, but I can be." I moved to the kitchen table and sat on a chair. Nick reached his hands up to be held from where he crawled on the floor. I situated him in my lap. "I'm sitting now."
Dr. Kanter calmly asked, "How do you feel about a heart transplant?"
