Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

Great intro to a series on a time-traveling English nurse and her 18th century Scottish man -- but it's not science fiction in the stricter sense of the term.

A lot of history in the series - you learn a lot about Scotland in the days before Culloden, a lot about Bonnie Prince Charlie. Later books in the series are just as good.

I started my daughter reading these when she was just 12 - now at 21 she's read each multiple times, even took this one with her on a semester abroad - and I've turned many others onto the series as well.
