Doreen Lowe is not the kind of woman that just up and marries a man she's only known for a few months. She has a responsibility to her family, to her past, and to her future husband. But when she first lays eyes on Ty Rockwell, those things quickly take a back seat to her intrigue.
From the point that Doreen, or Mini as Ty calls her, takes that fateful step away from the Penguins, her life begins to radically change. At times she's not sure if it's for the best or worst, but what she does know is that her path is full of color and uncertainty, qualities she embraces. While Doreen and Ty become a family, adding baby Jack to make a trio, and Ty builds his Wall Street Telecom business, life in Doreen's family goes on without her. Her father, Max, cannot reconcile himself with her choice and his distance cuts Doreen to the core.
Add a few wonderful friends like Regina and Lulu in the mix with their crazy lives, and Doreen's life is not ever what she expected and certainly far from dull.

This book truly surprised me. I wasn't sure what to expect as the back doesn't give much away. I thought Penguins would refer to lawyers. Imagine my surprise when I learned that the term Penguin actually is designated by Doreen, the main character, for her family of Holocaust survivors.
There are some deep issues at work here. Love, betrayal, history, remembrance to name a few. Doreen is an interesting character who will surprise you at every turn which kept my attention the whole way through. Ty is so completely lovable and real that you can't help but root for him. The secondary cast of characters like Regina, Lulu, Max, Faith, and Jack all add depth to this heartwarming tale.
I will warn you though - it is a tearjerker. Just as Doreen leaves you guessing, so does the author as she is constantly adding twists which take the plot in unexpected directions. I cried, several times, but found the book liberating - a real breath of fresh air!
