The Penny Pinchers Club by Sarah Strohmeyer

Book Club Picks: Penny Pinchers Club

"Someday someone will find themselves with $30,000 in debt and another person will end up with fifty pounds of chicken parts and they'll realize they need a group."

Kat Griffiths has a problem. She's a spend-a-holic. Whether it's racking up unpaid parking tickets or dropping two grand on an anniversary party, the certain truth is that Kat knows how to spend money. But she's afraid to look at the bill.

Unfortunately, her husband Griff is a saver. When Kat finds out he has an account she doesn't know about for ten thousand dollars, and has been trading secret emails with his cute, and very young, assistant, she realizes that she's about to get the boot. She's about to become her own Beth Williams, the woman whose husband forced her to ask for a divorce and then left her with nothing.

This, plus a string of crazy events, leads Kat to the Rocky River Penny Pinchers Club. This is not a club for your coupon-clipping, Target-shopping saver. The Penny Pinchers mean serious business. They'll start by invading your privacy and pulling together every last red cent of your debt, and then help you form an action plan for how to begin beating it. Sound like a group of militants in uniform? Well they are not. From an old woman who knits her clothes to an estranged from his family millionaire, this group is just plain wacky.

But, the lessons they teach Kat are invaluable and just might be the ticket to saving her marriage - or at least her bank account.

Book Club Picks: Penny Pinchers Club Opinion

While the premise for this book is outrageous (suburban housewife must figure out how to save 15K in a few months), the problems and the characters are all too real.

Kat is a good mom and a good wife but she likes to spend money. It was eye-opening to see that all the little purchases and trivial items we accumulate can really add up. They can add up to enough to put your child's college education in jeopardy if you're not careful! I think there are probably a decent amount of housewives that live this lifestyle.

The discussion of a failing marriage was also illuminating, actually kind of scary. Kat's marriage seems pretty good - they both love each other, they have a pretty hot sex life, and they laugh together even after many years. So how could he be cheating? Why would he be leaving? Can it really be because his wife's spending habits are so out of control?

The Penny Pinchers will help Kat learn to save, or go for broke trying!
