Savannah Blues Party Favors
by Summer
(Huntington WV, USA)
Hi there! I am usually very very good at coming up with unique favors for my book club. But this time, I am stumped. We are reading Savannah Blues, at my suggestion of course, and I was thinking of a very Savannah-ish theme.
The only thing I can think of is something to do w/ peaches because of the whole Georgia thing.
But I don't even know what to do with that! HELP!
Answer: Hi Summer and Thanks for Contacting Book Club Queen!
Now we haven't read Savannah Blues by Mary Kay Andrews yet but luckily, we are HUGE fans of Savannah, GA and learned quite a great deal about it from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I fell so in love with the downtown historic city that my husband and I spend our anniversary there each year!
That said, one of the things Savannah is most famous for is it's beautiful and carefully planned squares. It's quite a fun adventure to spend the day walking each one of them - and a great work-out too!
Savannah is laid out in a grid format, with 21 total squares throughout. There were originally 24 but 3 were torn down over the course of the city's rich and colorful history.
So why am I telling you all of this? I think it would be really neat to give each of your members a "Square" Themed favor. Each member could receive a different Square as the focus of their favor.
I would make the favor uniform, for example, a bookmark or postcard each member of your group could use as they read their next book club selection. Here is what I would do:
1. Decide upon a Square to give to each member. Look at Wikipedia, Squares of Savannah for a small, informational tidbit on each Square. Decide either based on the book or the personalities of each member.
2. Get thick cardstock for your computer printer. On the back of the postcard or bookmark print the information from Wikipedia about the chosen Square.
3. Go to Savannah Area Conventions and Visitors Bureau for images. They do not have images of every square but they do have a few great ones to choose from. If you can't find what you're looking for at this site then simply Google the name of the chosen Square and you'll find plenty of images.
4. Size the image to fit your bookmark or postcard. Print it on the front side, being sure to leave a space for you to either write or type the name of the Square.
I think your members will find this absolutely fantastic as the Squares are the fundamental building blocks of the city. I would also probably choose the postcard as it will give you a better size to work with when printing pictures of the chosen Squares.
I hope this helps and if you need further ideas, come back and we'll keep brainstorming!
