The Widow's Season by Laura Brodie

Book Club Picks: The Widow's Season

"You never did anything wrong--never drank or had affairs, or flirted with your students. I think I wanted you to do something wrong, just to bring you down to my level."

When Sarah turns the corner at the supermarket one afternoon and spots her husband David down the aisle, only she makes a big deal of it. The rest of the shoppers don't seem to notice or realize that Sarah's husband has been dead for three months.

This David-sighting begins a chain of events that turn Sarah's life from that of a quiet, mourning widower into a sought-after, fought-over, woman of mystery. As her dead husband resurfaces more frequently with an explanation that seems quite plausible, Sarah accidentally falls into a romantic relationship with his younger brother Nate. It is when these two worlds collide that Sarah is faced with her true choice - let her identity wash away with her past, or embrace her uncertain future alone.

Book Club Picks: The Widow's Season Opinion

This novel is beautifully written, the words flow over the pages much like David's river flows through the story.

There is an aura of mystery associated with the characters, as readers can't be sure if David is real or imagined or if Sarah is sane or crazy. The world they inhabit together after David's death is very dream-like and filmy which makes for a slow-moving plot.

If you are looking for a action-packed, page-turner, this book is not for you. What keeps the reader coming back is the desire to know what fate awaits Sarah. The best way I can describe this novel is quiet or still. It seems that the author hopes to put her readers into an introspective state of mind questioning life, death, and the meaning of our relationships.

Book Club Picks: The Widow's Season Discussion Questions

  1. Did Sarah let the love go out of her marriage once she realized she couldn't have a baby?
  2. Does Nate truly love Sarah or view her as a conquest - his brother's wife?
  3. Do you think David was a talented artist, or did people really like his work because he died young and tragically?
