Sin in the Second City by Karen Abbott

Book Club Reading Lists: Second City

"To that end, this book is also about identity, both personal and collective, and the struggle inherent in deciding how much of the old should accompany us as we rush, headlong, into the new."

Sin in the Second City depicts life in Chicago during the early 1900's. Brothels were a dime a dozen and white slavery was all the rage. The Everleigh Club was one of the most prestigious "businesses" of that time.

Book Club Reading Lists: Second City Opinion

Even though this book is a work of non-fiction, it reads, for the most part, as a fictionalized novel. I was intrigued by the goings on of that time. The madams of the Everleigh Club led me to do a lot of thinking. I feel that they were slightly hypocritical. They "employed" women in their illegal brothel, but treated them with respect. Even as I am writing this, I cannot understand how they had such opposing actions.

It was interesting to read about the opposition to the brothels and the competitiveness with the other brothels as well. Extensive research was put into this book and if you enjoy reading about this time period, you will enjoy this work.
