Stuff to Spy For by Don Bruns

"I think I'm stuck in an immature, irresponsible lifestyle, and I have to be content with that."

Skip Moore is like every other person I know; all he really wants is to be able to make some money so that he can buy the things he needs and maybe even some of the things he wants. Skip shares an apartment with his best friend James and together they have dreams; different ways to get rich, quick. Skip also has a girlfriend whom he desperately wants to prove himself to. She is a beautiful, intelligent, wealthy woman and he feels the need to show her that he can make money.

When an opportunity for a lot of money finds Skip, he doesn't hesitate. He and James jump right in. Skip is then presented with the chance to make a great deal of money and all he has to do is lie and spy. Needless to say, Skip accepts. He is now in way over his head. Will he be able to keep up the ruse without ruining everything? Will he figure out what is really going on without putting everything and everyone in harm's way?

Book Club Choices: Stuff to Spy For Opinion

Stuff to Spy For is a quick, easy read. What I found really interesting about this book is that the author works very hard to combine the elements of mystery with a good bit of humor. This is not an easy feat and he does it well.

I was also intrigued by Skip's girlfriend, Emily. How does a guy like him get a girl like her? I was so curious I asked the author in my interview!

I'm not sure how this will fit as a book club selection. Some groups will enjoy discussing the idea of spies spying on spies, while others might find the absurdity of the situation hard to discuss. For mystery-lovers, it's worth the read!

Discussion Questions:

  1. If you were offered the money that Skip is offered, would you say yes to the tasks?
  2. What do you think of the role that Skip's girlfriend Emily has in the story?
  3. James knew many movie quotes. Do you have any favorites that you quote often?
