Eloise is writing her dissertation on the history of a particular spy. While securing her research, she begins to date Colin whose ancestral documents are a part of her research. She comes across old letters while doing her research and the majority of the story takes place with the characters of those letters.

I had a hard time with this book. It flip-flopped between two time periods without much cohesiveness throughout the story. I feel that it could have been written as two separate novels if the relationship between Eloise and Colin had been developed more. I have not read any other works by Lauren Willig, so I am not certain if this is her style or not.
Charlotte's story was interesting. I was happy that it was told completely. It did remind me of The Other Boleyn Girl and The DaVinci Code. It seemed an odd mix at times but picked up and concluded well.
The story of Eloise and Colin, however, seemed almost like an afterthought. I was disappointed that their part was not as big of a focus as that of Charlotte. I felt somewhat confused by their relevance to the overall plot.
Interesting addition to review: After interviewing Lauren, much light has been shed on the lack of detail in Eloise and Colin's story. Check out the interview by clicking on the link to the right.

- If you were Charlotte, what would you have done differently with regards to Robert?
- What parts, of any, did you find to not be necessary to the story line and why?
- Would you have been so bold as to snoop around your significant other's study as Eloise did with Colin?
