Book Club Reading Lists: The Spare Wife

"I learned a long time ago that the people who are kind to you, who love you and care about you, are not necessarily the ones you were born to or raised with. You learn to find your family in all sorts of places."

The Spare Wife is a fictional glimpse inside the lives of those that live in New York City's prestigious Upper East Side. Even at the most glamorous dinner parties and events, deceit and betrayal run rampant.

There is, however, a bond that is present among a few of the elite that has created a "family" unit.

Book Club Reading Lists: Spare Wife Opinion

I thought I was going to love this book; unfortunately, I was disappointed. I was thoroughly confused by the seemingly unending cast of characters that were introduced in the first chapters. The book did explore the lives of those characters in the following chapters but every now and then I had a hard time keeping up.

I live in a suburb of New York and am not too acquainted with the lives of those that actually live on the Upper East Side, but if they are anything like those in this book, I would run screaming in the other direction. The cheating, lying and backstabbing that seemed so natural for these characters, made me dislike them and made it hard for me to enjoy reading it. Don't get me wrong, there was a story line and it was interesting, but it took a while for me to get into it.

Book Club Reading Lists: The Spare Wife Discussion Questions

  1. If you were Shawsie, would you have forgiven Ponce for lying to you?
  2. Would you have attended the dinner party solely because of the monetary contribution to a charity, even if you disliked the host and hostess?
  3. What are your honest opinions about the lives of the characters in this book?
