The Test by Patricia Gussin

"Let's make a pact. No more speaking of faults. We've all made mistakes, but we must move forward."

When dealing with the Last Will and Testament of a family member, things aren't always cut and dry. For the Parnell family, their inheritance can only be distributed if they pass a test their father left for them. The family has no idea what this test will entail, but they do know that there is an absurd amount of money at stake.

Over the course of a year, in the time before they are tested, the Parnell's are almost destroyed. Many separate instances lead to the disastrous situations of this family. Will any of the Parnell family pass? What will become of them? Is someone out to get them or are they just experiencing a streak of bad luck?

Book Club Choices: The Test Opinion

Definitely a suspenseful read!

I enjoyed most of the story line but the use of September 11, 2001 really bothered me. Maybe it is because I am a New Yorker and had a close connection to the tragedy, but I felt put off by the way it was incorporated into the plot.

There is great potential for discussion in a book club. Topics such as family, money, and death are just a few of the big ones. There are so many interesting plot twists that it will be fun to "put yourself into the characters' shoes," discussing what you would or would not do in a certain situation.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What do you think about leaving a test behind in order for a family to get their inheritance?
  2. What did you think about Ashley's spur of the moment decision during September 2001?
  3. Did you feel offended by any part of this book? Why do you agree or disagree with the members of your book club?
