| Book Club Picks: Megan's Way |
|---|
Megan Taylor is dying. Her mornings are filled with intense bouts of nausea and sickness. Her days are spent sleeping and hurting. Most of all, her time is spent trying to conceal her ever-encroaching illness from her daughter Olivia and best friend Holly.
After her first go-round with ovarian cancer, everyone thought Megan was in the clear, that she had "beaten it." A few, short years later Megan is informed by her doctor that the cancer is back, and this time it's in her bones. He gives her only months to live, telling her she might be able to prolong the inevitable with a host of medications. Megan struggles with this knowledge, and eventually makes the decision to stop taking her pills. She doesn't want her daughter to watch her suffer. She doesn't want to cause her friends unnecessary pain.
Megan's closest friends, Holly, Peter, and Jack are all hiding secrets and sorrows of their own. Each one feels as though they'll be lost without Megan's calming presence in their life, and their hearts break for poor Olivia who will lose her mom at such a young age.
This small group deeply cares for one another, but it won't be enough to stop fate from knocking.

A sad, sad tale.
Watching Megan come to terms with her own death, and the effect it will have on her daughter and closest friends is heart-wrenching. It's hard to decide if I would make the same decision she does given the circumstances. I can see that she feels the need to distance herself from Olivia in order for Olivia to let go and move on, but it doesn't seem like the right thing to do. I'm glad that she changed her mind before it was all over.
The mystery surrounding Olivia's birth and the identity of her father adds a layer to an already complicated situation. Throw in a supernatural connection between mother and daughter and this book has a little bit of something for everyone! I would definitely recommend it to book clubs, just be sure to have a tissue box handy.
