"When A Door Closes..." Paula Michele

by Paula Michele
(Long Beach, MS USA)

We had fallen asleep before the night had come to envelope us in its quietness. Upon waking there was only a dim light coming from a lamp somewhere on a table in the living room. Again I tried, gently, to coax Daniel awake telling him he had to get up, that he was getting heavy on top of me and to stop fooling around. I sat up laughing telling him that certainly I could not carry him to bed, but if that is what he wanted I would try to accommodate him. As I sat up, Daniel rolled off my body and on to the floor. By now I calmly told him he was carrying the joke too far.

"Get up!" I watched myself exclaim with controlled urgency. As I gently knelt down next to his body looking into his face my mind had decided to break into two pieces. Almost immediately I began arguing with myself. One side arguing with the other, "He's dead..." "Oh no he's not!" "Oh yes he is!" "Oh no he's not!"

The above is an excerpt from my book "When A Door Closes..." currently available online at all major bookstores in both hard cover and paperback. It is 326 pages in length and is fiction based loosely on my life.

When I was 30 years old I was engaged to a very wealthy blue blood attorney and literally ran away with the plumber only to have him die in my arms 8 months later, 30 days before the wedding.

Losing everything to my name, I became the 1st female state certified master plumber in the history of the State of Florida. No small feat as a former model and paralegal I defied the odds. The book is a whirl wind of ups and downs that I encountered but through perseverance and determination I beat the odds.

I call this my book of hope. After enduring all of the pain and heartache of waking up to a dead loved one, losing everything but the clothes on my back, raising two beautiful children (who I called my students in a lesson of hope), maybe this too will give someone else the fortitude to forge ahead in the face of adversity.

I am currently finishing the sequel. I look forward to speaking with your group and answering any questions you may have after you have had an opportunity to read the book. I am still currently holding book signings and look forward to being in your area.
